A foundational doctrine of true Christianity is a believer’s 'union' with Jesus Christ.
You must experience a 'co-crucifixion' so that your soul is set free from sin's power ... knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. (Romans 6:6)
Christianity is not merely an 'external' belief system, but a divine transformation that is 'positional' by nature ... I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)
Those who have been 'born-again' currently dwell in two dimensions ... this fallen world and 'in Christ'. We have been given a strong sense of being 'sojourners' here, recreated to fit the world to come ... Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
To understand the 'new creation', we must first grasp that it is indeed the Lord's handiwork, brought about by 'His will' alone. We are ... born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:13)
Secondly, 'old things have passed away'. This refers to the carnal nature, along with its pride and passions. The things we once loved ... we now detest. Our focus has changed from 'self-centeredness' to 'Christ-centeredness'.
Thirdly, 'the new has come'. We see things from God's point of view. There are newfound feelings toward family and friends, a new compassion never before felt for enemies, and a divinely inspired love for mankind in general.
Being made anew is a wondrous thing ... for it was formed in the mind of God, created by His power, and always for His glory.
