THE PURE IN HEART

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus made several brief statements known as 'beatitudes'. Today, we'll dive into the meaning of this one ...

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. (Matthew 5:8)

The Greek word for 'pure' means clean or unstained. The term 'heart' refers to the spiritual center of one's life ... where your thoughts, desires, purpose, will, understanding, and character reside.

The Bible reveals five types of purity:

1. Primitive Purity - that which belongs to God alone ... There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides You; there is no rock like our God. (1 Samuel 2:2)

2. Created Purity - that which mankind and angels had before they fell ... And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. (Genesis 1:31)

3. Positional Purity - that which is imputed during this age of grace ... Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1)

4. Practical Purity - living out that which we already have positionally (ongoing sanctification) ... Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10)

5. Ultimate Purity - that which we will possess in heaven one day (glorification) ..Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. (2 Peter 3:13)

The 'positionally pure' will see God

We have been declared innocent because of what took place on Calvary's cross. Jesus Christ bore our sin so that we could be cloaked in His righteousness before a holy God.
