Jesus Christ did not surrender His divinity when He came to this lost and dying world. He was fully human and fully God - a truth that our finite minds struggle to comprehend.
The term 'hypostatic union' refers to His dual nature ... The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel - which means 'God with us'. (Matthew 1:23)
In His bodily form, Jesus was a perfect representation of what it meant to be a man. He hungered, He thirsted, He learned, He wept, He suffered, and He died. The sacrificial Lamb of God was human in every way ... but one. He was tempted in all things just as we are, yet without sin. (Hebrews 4:15)
Yet, Jesus retained divine authority. He forgave sins, performed miracles, and accepted worship. He was still omnipotent and omniscient. As such, He secures salvation for all who surrender to His Lordship ... If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)
We are invited to embrace the mystery and wonder of Jesus' dual nature (rather than reducing Him to something we can explain in human terms). When you study the Word of God, Christ's divinity makes His teachings powerful and His humanity makes them relatable (and applicable).
Let us come before our Lord with reverence, giving thanks for the incredible love that prompted God to become 'human'. Continue to explore, ponder, and celebrate that which continues to captivate the heart, stir the imagination, and transform lives.
