THE BODY

There are three groups of people in the body of Christ whose attitudes and actions need attention. Paul saw it as a perpetual duty for those more mature in the faith ...

We urge you, brothers and sisters, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak ... (1 Thessalonians 5:14)

1. Admonish the unruly:

The 'unruly' are those who are undisciplined, out of step, and disorderly. 'Admonish' means to point out (not in a mean-spirited way) that their behavior is unacceptable.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. (Galatians 6:1)

2. Encourage the fainthearted:

The 'fainthearted' are those who are fearful, timid, and on the edge of giving up.  'Encourage' means come alongside in order to not only console, but to arouse the despondent heart.

Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you also are doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

3. Help the weak:

The 'weak' are those who are spiritually unsettled, not understanding the sufficiency of Jesus Christ for all things. 'Help' means to give assistance, making it easier for a person to comprehend and apply the truth of God's Word.

Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. (Romans 14:1, 15:1)

Though you may have walked by faith for many years, you must remember what it means to be in the body ... (lest pride sets in).

Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. (Romans 12:3-5)

Believers are not only to minister to those 'without' but to those 'within' ... the body of Christ.
