THE WILL

It refers to exercising volition: an inherent freedom to make decisions and act upon them.

Yet ... because our lives have been corrupted by sin, there is one resolution we can never carry out. It is impossible to 'will' ourselves into a right relationship with God.

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:12-13)

Divine sovereignty and human agency appear to conflict with one another. How do we accept predestination if not by our will to do so? Full understanding may not come until we are with the Lord.

Spurgeon - That God predestines, and that man is responsible, are two things that few can see. They are believed to be inconsistent and contradictory, but they are not. It is just the fault of our weak judgment.

The Holy Spirit reveals to 'the called' that salvation is not a product of human lineage, human effort, or human will.

For by grace, you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Today's liberal churches espouse an 'egocentric gospel' (i.e. that man dictates the terms of his salvation).

The Bible teaches otherwise. Man did not 'will' the plan of salvation into existence. It is solely attributed to the eternal and sovereign will of God.

In love, He predestined us for adoption to Himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will. (Ephesians 1:5)

We did not call the Son out of heaven; the Father sent Him.
Jesus did not obey our will, but God’s will.
