THE TROUBLED HEART

Picture the upper room.

Jesus and His disciples have assembled to partake of the 'last supper'. They listen intently as He reveals what is about to take place ... that one of them will betray Him, that His death by crucifixion has arrived, and that Peter will deny he even knows Him.

His words greatly upset them. Christ sees both the confusion and trepidation that rose in their minds and offers the following admonition ...

Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. (John 14:1-3)

Even though today's believers aren't in the same exact situation as those early followers of Christ, this beloved passage still resonates. As we navigate the stormy sea of end-time events and an ever-increasing evil, anxiety and fear can take root ...

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12)

Jesus' precious promise is meant to comfort our weary souls. Under His Lordship, there exists a perfect place of rest. We are hidden in Him, and the indwelling Holy Spirit equips us for the battle ...

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:3-5)

Unbelievers are watching how you respond to all that's going on in the world. Your 'untroubled' demeanor speaks volumes, so don't be surprised when questions come ...

Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear. (1 Peter 3:15)

Keep your eyes fixed on eternity, pilgrim.
