Throughout history, human beings have reflected on 'the meaning of life'. It is shaped by personal beliefs, values, and experiences ... so there is no universally accepted resolution. Man's worldly mindset and philosophical approach cannot explain his own existence.
The Bible approaches 'life' in three ways:
- Physical life is the animating force that takes place between one's birth and death. We are created to move, grow, and reproduce, yet the time we're here is fleeting ... For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. (James 4:14)
- Spiritual Life is unique to humans. We are created with 'souls' in order to have fellowship with God and experience moral consciousness ... And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7)
- Eternal Life is everyone's destiny; a 'never-ending' span, after your physical existence on earth comes to an end. It consists of two outcomes ... All shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. (John 5:29)
The definition of 'life' is in Jesus Christ ... I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:6)
We belong to Him ... For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. (Romans 14:7-8).
A 'rebirth' comes with salvation ... For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:3).
Blessed assurance is ours ... Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. (1 John 5:12)
The meaning of life is found in God's Word, and is divinely imparted into the heart of the redeemed ... not in the egocentric theories of a lost and dying world.
