When a follower of Christ suddenly reaches a decisive milestone on his walk of faith, that 'breakthrough' usually means that a spiritual struggle has been resolved.
The impact of having our eyes opened to previously untapped Biblical truths is vital to the Holy Spirit's sanctification process. It brings God-given discernment ... maturing our faith, strengthening our resolve, and helping us successfully navigate this lost and dying world.
The problem lies with believers who feel that they need a steady stream of mountain-top experiences to confirm a relationship with God. The charismatic movement has made Christianity into something that, from one moment to the next, is quite unstable. Their 'rock concert' worship services give rise to inflamed emotions that are but fleeting pseudo-evidences of faith.
The key is 'abiding' in Christ ...
He is our guide ... Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
His love is steadfast and sure ... For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)
Rest for your soul comes from His promise ... Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5)
Our life is hidden in Him ... I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)
Intimacy with God does not require a series of spiritual breakthroughs. Our kinship with the Father is through faith in His Son. 'Growth spurts' are not the substance of our relationship with Him, but simply ... 'icing' on the cake.
They tell us that we're on the right path and bless us along the way.
