By definition, contentment is 'the state of being satisfied with things as they are'.
Scripture reveals it as a sign of Christian maturity ... Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. (1 Timothy 6:6-8)
We remember that God is 'Jehovah Jireh' (our Provider) ... Be content with what you have, for He has said, 'I will never fail you nor forsake you'. (Hebrews 13:5)
The opposite of 'contentment' is 'worry'. Jesus tells us ... Do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? (Matthew 6:25)
The apostle Paul's ministry was fraught with unimaginable hardship, yet he found 'contentment' ... I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. (Philippians 4:11-12)
Note that Paul 'learned' contentment while he was experiencing affliction. It comes about when we rightly comprehend what we are already going through ... Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you fall into various trials. Be assured that the testing of your faith [through experience] produces endurance [leading to spiritual maturity, and inner peace]. (James 1:2-3)
Trusting God in everything is the secret of being content ... 'peace that passes understanding'.
