Sin is the 'yawning chasm' that separates human beings from their Creator, and constant reminders of one's immorality echo from those walls. In desperation, man tries to silence it ... but no amount of discipline, denial, or distraction brings lasting relief.
That great gulf needed to be spanned.
Going from utter darkness into glorious light comes by way of Jesus Christ. It's as if the timber that made Calvary's cross was used to build salvation's bridge.
Paul anticipated safe passage from one side to the other ... For I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day. (2 Timothy 1:12)
Spurgeon - Both the 'knowing' and the 'believing' center around the wondrous person who, for our sakes, left His starry throne and became a man. Knowing 'Whom' is saving knowledge ... Believing 'Whom' is saving trust. All other knowing and believing falls short.
The apostle laid aside the doubt and fear associated with the guilt of his past ...
- Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:13-14)
- For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)
- Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6)
Trying to keep your soul intact and safe through human effort is fruitless. Your only hope is to entrust all that you are to the Lord Jesus.
You'll ... be persuaded.
