CHEAP GRACE

It is a term that refers to a superficial kind of faith, one that doesn't demand repentance or obedience. Those who believe that forgiveness comes at no cost to the recipient have either rejected or mishandled God's Word.

People who ascribe to this 'ethereal' type of salvation are looking for a shame-free religious experience that doesn't require a transformed life.

It justifies sin without justifying the sinner.

They use this passage to defend their theological position ... For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

The truth is ... Salvation is a free gift that costs you everything.

We must make room:

  • Put away, as concerning your former way of life, the 'old man' that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind. (Ephesians 4:22-23)
  • Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. (Matthew 16:24)
  • I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)
  • Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:11)

That which flows from God's throne of grace was paid for at great cost. The blood of His Son opened the 'floodgate of forgiveness' for all who surrender to His Lordship.

'Cheap grace' is simply what a sinner grants to himself ... for the sole purpose of placating a guilty conscience.
