TO THE UTTERMOST

The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ made a way for us to be saved from the wrath to come. When you confess His Lordship and believe that God raised Him from the dead, a great exchange takes place ... sin's death clothes for a cloak of righteousness.

He is able to save the vilest sinner - at all times, in all cases, at every juncture in life. But the Lord's ministry does not end with one's acceptance of that gift. He continues as our Advocate ...

Therefore, He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25)

The phrase 'to the uttermost' signifies that salvation is a finished work of Grace that's maintained by Christ's role as Priest and King. He continues to provide deliverance from sin's power as we wait for His return ...

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

The assurance of one's salvation is wrapped up in that one word - 'uttermost'.

Spurgeon - How far can salvation go? What are its limits and its boundaries? Some ministers preach that a man may be a child of God today, and a child of the devil tomorrow; that God may acquit a man, and yet condemn him - save him by grace, and then let him perish. Wherever I go, I hope always to bear my hearty protest against that most accursed doctrine - that of a saint's falling away and perishing.

Eternal life begins here and now for those who put their trust in Christ ... not after they experience bodily death. Faith is not a self-reliant balancing act between good and evil (with feelings of doubt and fear).

Lay your burden down and experience the Lord's 'uttermost' ...
