THE VINE

Abiding in Christ connects us to the source of abundant life. He used a figurative analogy in the book of John to help us understand this vital spiritual relationship.

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. John 15:1-2

The Vine represents Jesus. He is the perfect conduit between God's divine will and man's human frailtyThe branches are believers. Though distant and distinct from one another, they meet in Christ ... fruitless unless borne by the Vine.

The Father is the Husbandman. He is ever watchful over the vineyard and according to His expectations, all branches must bear fruit ... (love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  Galatians 5:22-23)

But even fruitful branches need pruning, for they often have wayward notions that must be taken out of the way (a picture of our sanctification).

True disciples have a continual dependence upon Jesus. Those who are self-reliant may appear to flourish for a time, but cannot sustain their Christian facade. A brush fire is waiting for these withered dead branches.

The more fruit you bring forth, the more our Lord is glorified. But be careful not to become sidetracked, pilgrim. As a branch, your focus should be on the Vine ... not the fruit.
