Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. Philippians 4:8
This is not a psychological ploy or some 'mind over matter' trick. It is instead our Lord's loving directive ... meant to strengthen the resolve of Christians as the day of His appearing draws near. By faith, we are to trust everything to God's sovereignty.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2
Note that it is not the "Power of Positive Thinking" philosophy popularized by Norman Vincent Peale. Sadly, his influence has crept into today's church. The idea that it is always wrong to be negative (or critical) has resulted in the loss of Spirit-led discernment.
A believer's 'thought life' should be focused on the great truths found in the Bible. Even though the study of Scripture is not specifically mentioned in the above passages, we can assume that it is our source for knowing what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and of good repute.
