The first plague to come upon Egypt? ... the turning of water into blood.
So he lifted up the rod and struck the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants. And all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood. Exodus 7:20
The first miracle performed by Christ? ... the turning of water into wine.
Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. John 2:7-9
These two events represent man's relationship with God. Under the old covenant, deliverance comes through external obedience. Under the new covenant, deliverance comes through internal 're-creation'.
For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:17
The new covenant could only be offered once the old covenant had been satisfied. 'Wine' and 'blood' met on Calvary's cross. At the last supper, Jesus spoke of that cup ...
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, 'Take and eat; this is my body.' Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, 'Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins'. Matthew 26:26-28
The salvation purchased by Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection is universal in its provision, but not in its application. You are not automatically saved because He died for all mankind. Your redemption only comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
