Depending on the context, the word 'fear' has several different meanings in the Bible. It can refer to the terror one feels in a frightening situation, the respect a servant has for his master, or the veneration a person experiences in the presence of greatness. Today we will look at the phrase, 'Fear of the Lord'.
It is found throughout Scripture and often linked to the word 'wisdom' ...
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; All those who follow His commandments have a good understanding; His praise endures forever. Psalm 111:10
The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death. Proverbs 14:27
The fear of the Lord is the instruction for wisdom, And before honor comes humility. Proverbs 15:33
'Fear' (when used in conjunction with the phrase 'of the Lord') is a continual awareness that our heavenly Father is watching and evaluating everything we think, say, and do.
When the Holy Spirit allows you to catch a glimpse of God's majesty and power ... 'fear' manifests in your heart and mind as 'deep reverence' and a sincere commitment to obey Him.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7
This verse gives us added insight ... there is a sharp contrast between the 'wise' and the 'foolish'. A wise person surrenders his ways to the Lord; a fool rejects God’s instruction and will not be told what to do.
... they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools. Romans 1:21-22
We cannot possess true wisdom if we choose to create God in our own image. Too many people want to reduce Him to an impotent 'non-threatening' deity. But when you redefine the Lord as a permissive 'buddy' who exists only to bless us, give us what we want, and make us feel comfortable ... you will never 'fear' Him in the way He deserves.
You may gain knowledge of earthly things and plot a practical course ... but you won't see life from God’s perspective and make decisions based on His approval if you have no fear. The end thereof is fruitless.
Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, Proverbs 3:13
