Before a person surrenders his life to Christ, he is egocentric by nature. Even if he is considered loving and kind by those who know him, what motivates his behavior does not come from a pure heart ... nor can it.
Men may try to mask self-centeredness with obedience to a strict code of ethics, but the Lord sees through every vain attempt to earn His favor.
All our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment. Isaiah 64:6
Without the cleansing blood of Christ applied to our life, we have no hope ...
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
There was a time when even nonbelievers had a moral compass, but that has all but vanished. The innocence of 'Mayberry' no longer exists. In these prophesied 'last days', we are witnessing a reprobate world that has embraced a 'Me First Ideology'.
'Self' reigns supreme in the hearts and minds of this lost generation. They demand respect, embrace evil, protest that which is good, and openly despise those who love the Lord.
So ... how are we to navigate this hate-filled landscape?
Resist the temptation to grumble and remember God is sovereign ... Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. (Philippians 2:14-15)
Let this sink in, pilgrim ... As a follower of Christ, this world is as close to hell as you'll ever be. But for the unbeliever, this world is as close to heaven as he'll ever be.
