NO SUCH THING

There is an oft-used title given to a believer who appears selfless, kind, caring, positive, and joyful ... 'Good Christian'.

On the surface, it’s a lovely sentiment. Every follower of Christ should want people to see evidence of his relationship with God. Jesus expressed it this way ... Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)

We are to be a hopeful beacon in this dark world so that lost souls can find their way to the foot of the cross. But the term 'good Christian' presents a problem.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING

Even Christ would not allow it ... Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. (Mark 10:18)

The notion flies in the face of the Gospel message. It creates a hierarchy where none was ever intended and subtly brings glory to man. It is only by God's grace and mercy, that we are made free. The truth is ... our goodness (righteousness) is as filthy rags. (Isaiah 64:6)

Maybe today's subject can be better phrased ... The only 'good Christian' is a 'dead Christian'.

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:20

Be glad that God doesn't judge you according to your goodness, but by the goodness of His Son ... applied to your account.
