By faith, we are forgiven and cleansed of sin through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. We are 'born again' into newness of life, the Holy Spirit comes in, and His work of sanctification begins ... And having been set free from sin, you have become the slaves of righteousness [of conformity to God’s will and purpose]. (Romans 6:18 Amp)
Because we remain trapped in these mortal bodies, the battle with temptation continues until we arrive at our heavenly destination ... For the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. (Galatians 5:17)
Though we will never be perfectly victorious over sin until we are freed from this earthly tabernacle, we are called to head in that direction ... Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (2 Timothy 2:22)
So ... how can we overcome sin?
We are to consistently follow His promptings ... Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16)
Memorize it, meditate on it, and apply it to your life ... All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16)
Acknowledge your limitations and continually turn to the Lord for strength ... Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. (Matthew 26:41)
Be open with other believers who will talk with you, pray with you, and encourage you ... Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. (James 5:16)
The Lord has promised to be with us as we navigate this fallen world. If we use the above resources, a beautiful transformation will take place as chains of iniquity are broken.
And remember this, pilgrim ... Overcoming sin has much to do with maintaining an intimate relationship with your loving Savior.
Hold His hand.
