According to Scripture, there are two 'species' of wolves with whom we must contend.
1. 'Outsiders' who aggressively attack the Christian faith ...
We must not be naive, men are sinners separated from God and most have no desire to know the truth found in Christ. Because their heart is depraved, they will likely display hostility.
Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. (Matthew 10:16)
The Shepherd of our souls has chosen us to be a light in the darkness. He instructs us to say the right thing at the right time with a selfless sense of propriety. To be intemperate when sharing the Gospel is neither 'wise' nor 'harmless' ... Be ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15)
2. 'Insiders' who teach heretical doctrines of men ...
Not only do cults have leaders who teach fallacious edicts from a reprobate imagination, mainline churches have also fallen prey to preachers who misinterpret Scripture to advance their own personal agendas.
I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. (Acts 20:29-30)
Religious leaders are often well-received because they tell people what they want to hear rather than what the Lord has said. We must carefully examine those who claim to speak for God ... Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit, you will recognize them. (Matthew 7:15-16)
We are in the last days and unprecedented evil has been unleashed on a lost and dying world. Without Jesus, you are defenseless and in danger. But with Him, you have protection and peace.
I pray that you can confidently affirm ... He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. (Psalm 91:2)
